CONNECTING QUARKS WITH THE COSMOS

ABSTRACT. Several years ago the United States National Academy of Science was
directed to produce an outline of the Big Fundamental Questions facing Physics. The
result was a booklet titled “Connecting Quarks with the Cosmos” which outlined
the Academy’s view of the main questions that must be answered if we are take the
next step towards understanding the universe at the smallest and largest scales. I
will survey these questions and outline some of the work being done by faculty and
students at the University of Virginia towards answering these questions.
